Overview

When I joined vchnl as the Founding Product Designer, the vision was to create a "digital layer" over physical spaces through an AI-assisted, geo-based social platform. Leading the 0-1 design lifecycle, I addressed a critical socio-technical tension: how to enable spontaneous, real-time communication within hyper-local boundaries (like a specific library floor) while maintaining the structural safety required for scalable community growth. By the end of the project, I had established a robust design framework and a unique AI-driven moderation system that allows digital communities to form autonomously based on physical presence.

Solution

Feature 1.
Context-Aware Geolocation Community Formation

Rather than standard radius-based circles, this feature utilizes a proprietary drawing algorithm allowing users to define precise community boundaries based on physical context (e.g., specific building floors or library sections). This design judgment allows hyper-local communities to form autonomously and sustainably, ensuring that the digital layer aligns perfectly with the nuances of physical presence.

Feature 2.
AI-Human Collaboration Moderation

I spearheaded the design of an "AI Safety Sensor". Instead of relying solely on reactive human moderation, this system proactively filters content and images (Source 241) at the point of entry. It balances automated efficiency with human judgment by escalating complex edge cases to a backend moderation interface.

Beyond Proximity—Designing for Digital Safety in Physical Spaces

What stayed with me during the 0-1 process was the realization that geo-fenced chatrooms are uniquely vulnerable to the "tragedy of the commons." Because participants are physically co-located but digitally anonymous, the risk of toxic interaction is high. I questioned the team’s initial assumption that standard reporting tools would suffice for such high-velocity, localized environments. Instead, I pivoted the strategy to design a "Community Safety Sensor System." By integrating AI-assisted content filtering directly into the geo-fenced logic, we moved from reactive moderation to proactive structural protection. This project taught me that in AI-native social systems, design judgment must prioritize systemic resilience over mere feature parity.

Safety isn't an afterthought; it's the prerequisite for digital presence.
